A marine conservation arts project

“The natural world is the greatest source of excitement. The greatest source of visual beauty. It is the greatest source of so much in life that makes life worth living.”

– Sir David Attenborough

Global Shorelines is a visual arts project. All of the collected work has been stimulated by experiences captured during walks at that transition point between sea and shore.

This is a self-funded, not-for-profit project. 100% of proceeds from exhibitions and sales of work, postcards and the exhibition catalogue are donated to marine conservation charities.

Smartphone Images

Mobile technology allows us the opportunity to record experiences with an immediacy and accuracy, which was previously not possible. Everyone now has access to a tool which can be incredibly creative, and also informative. Smartphone imagery is suitable for small to medium scale printed images. Most young people understand how to make the most of their phone and it is an ideal tool for capturing images on location.

DSLR/High Density Images

High density, digitally captured imagery can show every tiny nuance in the natural environment. Subtle colours, varied textures and the layering of transparent and semi-transparent elements. High density images are suitable for large and very large scale gallery work.

graphic media responses

Responding to the colours, textures, light and movement of the shoreline through the use of graphic and craft media. Drawing, painting, printmaking, mixed-media and textiles.

sea pollution
...and why we need to value our Shorelines

There is an unfortunate assumption that, because the sea is big (very big), it can withstand the effects of unrestrained human development. Increasingly, we are understanding that this is far from the truth. Artists constantly make statements about their surroundings and, in doing so, provoke emotional responses. This is precisely the intention with the Global Shorelines project.

Explore The COAST

This project is all about raising awareness of the beauty of our coastlines and our responsibility, as a species, to preserve them . The intention is to use art to focus attention on that transition point between sea and land, and also support marine conservation projects.

Starting points

This project was started by Kevin J Healy in Suffolk, UK.

Kevin trained as a Fine Art Printmaker at Brighton School of Art, Sussex 1978/81, and then as a teacher of art in Cardiff. He worked in arts education in Suffolk for 32 years. Following retirement, he started the Global Shorelines project as a not-for-personal-profit initiative, to support marine conservation charities.

If you love being beside the sea, why not share a photograph, drawing or print of your shoreline experience with the project.

The launch exhibition took place in Felixstowe in September 2020 as a fundraiser for: The Marine Conservation Society UK. Registered charity 1004005. The collection has been shown at the Gairloch Heritage Museum in Wester Ross, The Yare Gallery, Great Yarmouth and Life: Full Colour Gallery, Caernarfon.
